AnythingLLM vs Msty, and the open-source system a team owns

AnythingLLM and Msty are local-first AI apps you run and use yourself, and the open-source system a team owns is Kortix. One is open source and multi-user only on Docker; the other is commercial with paid team plans.

In the repo: what one agent may reach

kortix.yaml
agents: release-bot: file: agents/release-bot.md connectors: [github] kortix_permissions: [project.gitops.push] secrets: [GITHUB_AGENT_TOKEN]
source: https://kortix.com/docs/project/manifest

A Kortix agent holds its own connectors, permissions and secret names in the project's kortix.yaml, so reach is scoped per agent as well as per person.

What AnythingLLM and Msty each are

AnythingLLM is a document-chat app from Mintplex Labs. You point it at files and talk to them, with agents and retrieval built in. It is open source, and it runs as a desktop app, a Docker server, or a managed hosted cloud. Multi-user support and permissioning are part of the Docker version, and the desktop app stays single-user, as AnythingLLM's own repository states. The hosted cloud form ships no built-in model, supports no custom agents and supports no MCP.

Msty is a commercial app from CloudStack, LLC. It runs local and online models from a desktop app or in a browser, with Agent Mode for multi-step tasks, Knowledge Stacks for retrieval, and MCP tools, as Msty Studio's own documentation describes. Msty's own repository states that the app is not open source (Msty repository).

Where the two apps differ

Both connect local models and online providers, and both keep your data on your device by default. AnythingLLM is open source, and its multi-user features need the Docker version. Msty is closed, and its team controls sit on paid plans. On price, Msty Studio is free to start, its Aurum plan is $149 per person per year, and a one-time lifetime option is $349 per person, checked October 2026 (Msty pricing). The AnythingLLM hosted cloud is a paid tier of a free, open-source app.

On agents, AnythingLLM ships a no-code agent builder that runs a custom agent on the desktop and self-hosted forms. Msty ships Agent Mode, and its Go product adds bounded agent workflows that are in free beta, checked October 2026. Both run their agents in the app itself. Neither keeps the company's configuration in a repo a team owns, and neither gives a session its own cloud computer.

The third option: a system a team owns

Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: your agents, their skills, your company memory, and every connector in one git repo you own, with the agents working on real cloud computers. Per-resource permissions for people and agents. Roles, groups, and an audit trail. One isolated sandbox per session. Each session has its own isolated machine and branch. Session work reaches main through a change request. Merge is default-deny for agents. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free.

The models are yours: any model provider with your own keys. Or the ChatGPT plan you already pay for. Or sign in with your OpenCode Console account for OpenCode Zen and Go. Free is $0 with 200 credits per month and 1 project. The team plan is $40 per seat per month with 2,500 credits per month per seat, pooled (Kortix pricing, checked October 2026).
